Certified Orthotist specializing in infant head shape management.
Hi I’m Becki and I’m a Certified Orthotist with a specialization in infant head shape management and treatment with cranial helmets. I’m also a parent of a child who has a history of plagiocephaly.
Why am I so passionate about helping parents understand infant head shape deformities and what is my goal here at Bloom Kids? I believe that parents deserve to be deeply listened to and supported with care and compassion. This has become the cornerstone for everything that I do, from understanding a parent’s concerns at an initial assessment to encouraging a no helmet approach (when appropriate) to providing education that optimizes the treatment process, whether it be a helmet, referral to other health care professional or repositioning education. Finally, I pride myself on prescribing and designing custom cranial remolding helmets that optimize treatment time and meet the unique needs of each baby I treat.
I’ve been helping families of infants with head shape concerns for 17 years and I often see a gap between what is most important to parents and what many existing support systems provide. I want to close this gap as I know it will improve patient outcomes.
With most of my clinical practice devoted to infant head shape management, I’ve been able to get up close and personal with my patient’s families, glean intimate details about their helmet journey’s and understand their frustrations.
I use my training from my Master’s program (McMaster University) and cranial care specialization courses to translate what we know about infant development and correctional forces along with my deep understanding of parental needs to offer clear and meaningful treatment options that empower parents to make the right decisions for their baby.
This corner of infant healthcare is so unique in that there is only a very small window of time where we can help solve head shape deformities. Nothing frustrates me more than assessing an infant too late knowing that more could have been done if proper education was provided earlier or perhaps more accurately understood within our local medical community. I believe it is my purpose to change this.
If you are at the beginning of your head shape journey, I want you to feel confident in being able to advocate for your baby. I want to have a clear understanding of your baby's head shape consultation, what your treatment options are and if appropriate, help you request timely referrals.
If you choose to move forward with cranial remolding therapy, I want you to feel confident about your choice by preparing you beforehand to easily overcome common treatment challenges and optimize your therapy to achieve the results you want in as short an amount of time as possible.
Along the way, my greatest hope is to create a movement that more normalizes infant cranial remolding therapy, educates the public, reduces astigmatism and eradicates parental guilt surrounding infant head shape deformity.
